lyrics

i found a river
blue like the deep
but my hands could touch the bottom of it
so i walked thinking i could be there sooner
thinking i could be there fast
till i met an old man
he said “son, what you running from?”
i said “i can’t swim, and i’m drowning in the pain.”
the old man said “look up.”
said “son, you gotta be alright.”
i looked down low
where were my toes?
they were walking on the stones
so i carried that river
till i got home
when i was shivering, sun was down
and i knew one more night and i’d be in the ground
said “i gotta stay with you, not because i love you, but because i’m scared.”
then he said “look up, look down. you see your feet on the ground? “
then he said “look up. you’ll see the sky before you know it, you’re dreaming of a new life.”
so i carried the river
till i got home
what about them boys swinging in the breeze
don’t you think they deserve more?
he said “son, look up. they’re not in the breeze. they’re down on their knees.”
i carried the river
till i got home
you’d carry a river
till you get home

(you take the river
and you can run)
