the old man said “look up.”

where were my toes?

so i carried that river
till i got home
when i was shivering, sun was down
and i knew one more night and i’d be in the ground
said “i gotta stay with you, not because i love you, but because i’m scared.”
then he said “look up, look down. you see your feet on the ground? “
then he said “look up. you’ll see the sky before you know it, you’re dreaming of a new life.”
so i carried the river
till i got home
what about them boys swinging in the breeze
don’t you think they deserve more?
he said “son, look up. they’re not in the breeze. they’re down on their knees.”
